HMS LEOPARD, BRITISH FRIGATE, AT SEA. (A 34521) December 1961, HMS Leopard made a 1,600-mile dash across the South Atlantic from Simonstown, South Africa, to the stricken island of Tristan da Cunha. ‘Nestling at the foot of a 2,000ft cliff at the back of the settlement was what looked like a Black Country slag heap that was emptying a column of white smoke into the air.
